Melbourne!

Just prior to Christmas I had the the pleasure of travelling down to Mebourne, where i learned a few things. Cities lacking major historical attractions like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Empire State Building NYC, Big Ben London will inevitably seek to compensate through the design of their other buildings and design in everything. This was noted in the Beijing Olympics where the London organising comittee explaining a smaller budget by saying "London already has its landmarks, Beijing had to build them" (Referring to the bird's nest and water cube) I noticed this was certainly true for Melbourne. Melbourne lacks major landmarks (aside from Flinder's St station, which i'm told was a mistake by an architect) But everywhere I looked I saw quirky and interesting design features that made mundane buildings works of art. Thie picture above is of The Transport hotel in Melbourne that uses visible pipes to deliver beer to the taps and some quirky lighting to add a sense of character and history to a pub that until recently had none.

I feel Sydney relies on it's looks (Opera house, Harbour bridge)to gain global credibility when it should rather focus on the details and the big picture will look after itself. We need those licensing laws for hole in the wall pubs and encouragement of street art and design for a happier place that is inerently better, rather than relying on our "best olympics ever" and fancy bridges.

Another thing I noticed in Melbourne was the sheer volume of Restaurants. Their seems to be a restaurant cafe or bar at every second shop front and I struggled to figure out how they could all continue to operating. After a meal at a place called Il Solito Posto (http://www.ilsolitoposto.com.au/) i figured out why. They are all good. if you serve good food, people will pay to eat it! This was one of the best meals I ever tasted. I had Prawn risotto balls and then Veal tenderloins that were amazing. Go Here!

We also went to Lygon street and had some great pizza for a third of the price. I forget it's name but go to Lygon street and go to the place that doesn't have a spruker hassling you as you go by. (Sprukers are a major turn off, I don't care that your mum is the chef if anything that makes me less likely to eat there!)

If you go for shopping go to Chapel st it's the trendiest and widest variety.

Go to see Wicked! the musical. it was amazing hence i mention it again!

Til next time Peace out!

Songs that I didn't like at first...

Here are a few songs that I didn't like when they were initially popular but have since come to love, in some cases love intensely. It's weird sometimes radio overplay can kill a song but truly good songs will come good in the end.

Daft punk- One More time

When this song first came out it was all over the radio before i knew anything about dance music andfound it repeptitive and boring... My BAD!!

Elton John- Benny and the jets

Such a great song but when i first heard it i found the irregular beat off putting. Oddly its use in some movies like 27 dresses made me come to love it! Bring on Billy Joel Elton John face to face next year!

Rhianna- Umbrella

This song got absolutely thrashed all over commercial radio and it annoyed the shit out of me, but A girl on Idol sang it about 2 years later and it rocked! (yes i love idol, so what?)

Binge Drinking and Feminism

Aren't my titles fun? usually pretty odd combo's of topics but i like it that way. people would lose interest otherwise....

So Saturday night was my first binge drink after the new binge drinking laws came in. No idea why Cargo needs it, as a regular (eww) fights are pretty rare and most of the time the idiot probably deserved it. i found the new laws just made people even more agitated. waiting in longer lines for less drinks and waiting ten minutes for no reason is ridiculous! In conclusion there is no chance these laws will help one bit. THey are punishing business because they can't police the streets effectively because they have no money. If government was that worried, make harsher punishments. Punish the offender not the business.

On that, these laws wouldn't be so bad if people were just sensible. Littering is unecessary. If you are getting drunken food, buy it, eat it put it the bin and leave. not HARD! If you see a pot plant and think its a good idea to knock it over, DON"T!! Someone poor guy will have to clean it up and will complain on AM radio for 6 weeks. If you bump into someone, apologise! Manners people!

Here's a marvellous song that got dedicated to the newsreader on 2UE (Hilarious!) I sent it to a friend it creeped her out though... my BAD!

It reminded me of a lecture i went tot his semester that mentioned that the girl was a major hottie and she shaved her head to avoid being objectified as a woman. Groundbreaking stuff at the time.

Sinead O Connor- Nothing Compares to you

Louis Theroux and late Night TV

Why is it that all my favorite TV is on late at night?? Boston legal, 30 Rock, Shipwrecked,The office. Man I have to stay up so late to watch some decent TV.

On the up side, I found Louis Theroux who does documentaries before Shipwrecked on Mondays on Channel 7. His show is done mostly in America and he has a manner that is inexplicably engaging. The things he experiences are very interesting and sometimes funny but often disturbing (see the one on swinging to know what I mean)

This is one I Youtubed on Street Violence in Philidelphia top notch stuff.

This one is hilarious. Advice: Don't question Wreslters about the validity of their "sport"

Porching, People watching, and Don't forget the Lyrics

streetartist

One of my fav Banksy paintings. Banksy Rocks.

Sometimes I think I could sit on a porch/stoop for an entire day just watching the world go by. Today I Went to a friend's front yard and just watched the world go by. It was awesome! I think people watching is better in the city though. I went to the Ivy on a Thursday and it was so good for people watching such a crazy mix of people and personalities. This one lady had clearly been there all day and hooked up with 3 different guys and then took her shoes off to walk down the stairs. What are your favourite people watching stories?? Hamish and Andy brought it up on their show a while back man they're funny. I also enjoy commenting on Fashion while i'm at uni. seriously you should see what these people leave the house in. Thigh High socks with matching berets! Don't get me started on crazy purple Croc and purple velvet pants blackboard cleaner man...

Also tonight saw the return of Don't forget the Lyrics perhaps the greatest game show ever where all the contestants do is sing songs and guess lyrics millionaire style. The contestants are so crazy and fun they must audition them.

Don't Freestyle much but i write em like such word!

So The title doesn't really help with what i'm talking about but whatever it's a fun lyric.

Party Dress codes. I have noticed an increasing number of people who disregard dress codes at 21st's or other social engagments. I feel its the height of rudeness and its not hard to dress appropriately. Here are some rules to follow.

Smart Casual- Contrary to popular belief, this classic dress code for boys is pants and a collared shirt. jeans can sometimes work but it depends on venue and the host's personality.

Cocktail- Wear a suit, it's not hard everyone has one. If you wear jeans even with a jacket you aren't dressed appropriately and i will think less of you. T shirts aren't cocktail i don't know why anyone would think that!

Black Tie- Tuxedo. not hard

White Tie- Tails never done but wouldn't it be fun!

Fancy Dress- Try to make an effort, i always try to wear something that i can either throw away, or take off and look normal. i'm not a fan of going all out on an outift and having to trample through the cross dressed like an idiot at 6am.

That was a quick rant but it's important stuff. I'm also a bit annoyed at what counts for a cocktail dress these days.

Here is P.E rapping outta 1998

Public Enemy- He got Game

MGMT vs Billy Joel

So MGMT is probably the breakthrough artist of the year. Their album rocks and all the kids are saying how cool they are for knowing who they are and buying a ticket to their show. Alas Billy Joel the piano man himself is once again touring downunder. Dilemma! What to do, the concerts are on the same night! The videos below will help you choose.

MGMT- Time to Pretend (you saw it on gossip girl)It's ok i guess

Billy Joel- Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

For me Case closed. See you at Billy Joel

A musical Interlude

After that trip down blog memory lane here are some fun songs

This first one is by Mercy Arms. A mate from school is the lead singer and i saw them at Luna Park once. They rocked good listening music. Their new album is coming out or is out.

Mercy Arms- Half Right

This next one is a song you should know, and i'm dying for john the piano man at Minksy's to play it but i don't think he will. Apparently its huge in colleges in America, but i found it on The wedding singer during Adam Sandler's wedding. It was used in the Soprano's and somewhere else i forget. STEVE PERRY!!

Journey- Don't Stop Believin'

All this in love, Rainbow Stylin'

COPS- stun gun special and weddings

So once again COPS has pulled through with a stun gun special. Every conflict in the show was solved by using a stun gun! the best being the guy with a knife threatening to kill himself then this SWAT guy came up behind him and zapped his Ass! it was awesome!!!!COPS is easily the best tv show ever made.

talking about the best things ever i have a new one. Weddings! they are the bomb! the best food and best drinks for free and everyone looks hot because you dress nice coz its a wedding! they are certainly a level above 21st's. 21st's are good but people go all out for weddings and its awesome. Wedding crasher's the movie has become a whole lot more relevant since i have actually been to one. I have decided to get married heaps of times just so i can have a kick ass wedding! so loose guys so loose!

Musings on diet coke and group photos.

diet coke and group photos

isn't it cool that as social people if asked usually by a PLC girl or Rosie for a group photo the arms around people almost instantly rise so that you usually know the person next to you but the person at the other end you may have never met before but by the time you look at the photo you will have met them and probably become friends. kinda cool isn't it.

in other news i wish diet coke cans came as 400mls coz whenever i finish i just want one more sip. like who decided on 375ml anyway its stupid just make it 400ml and leave me totally satisfied

This is a song by one of the guysd from Justice, the singer from the Bumbleez and a guy from Soulwax. it tears it up. I thought i'd brighten things up with a song rather than clogging this page with verbosity.

I must've been enjoying uni at this time

Gus about uni
Current mood: jubilant

Hey i totally want to go back to uni! i love that every day feels different and irregular even though you do the same thing every week. you get to see someone different every day. the best thing is if its hot you can wear shorts and if it's cold you can still wear shorts, you don't even have to go to class but if you do, you might even learn something interesting that you actually enjoy learning about. i love driving to uni but i don't think i will as much because i want to go to every uni thing this year make the most of hopefully my last year. i like that you can have those regular people you meet up with in a break and that every time someone different can and will join in i like uni better when its sunny though not so fun when its raining. i get challenged at uni and its fun! yay uni! i want to go back!

much love

field day related epiphany
Category: Music

a new year brings with it some new musical rants. so busted out majorly at field day on the first of january and it was awesome! and raises some questions on my U2 related musical epiphany but i think i figured it out. dance/house music is just sooo post-modern it's all about instantaneous pleasure of the body rather than anything with greater substance and as such doesn't tend to last long before getting overplayed and losing it's significance it's the reason why you're ipod needs constant updating as as soon as one song is good another will replace it.

Perhaps i only enjoyed field day coz i got wasted spent all my money and was with an awesome group of people rather than the music i saw (presets in the rain was wicked good though) apparently kaskade played? if the music had more substance would i have enjoyed the festival for its musical merits just as much as the company i was in? time will tell will see if in thirty years i'll be listening to the presets greatest hits III and going to a field day renunion tour starring a 60 year old mylo. doesn't mean house is shit music it's awesome for the moment but i think it might lack the identity and substance to be retained for years to come. whatever that was pretty heavy i need to go back to uni!
