Melbourne!

Just prior to Christmas I had the the pleasure of travelling down to Mebourne, where i learned a few things. Cities lacking major historical attractions like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Empire State Building NYC, Big Ben London will inevitably seek to compensate through the design of their other buildings and design in everything. This was noted in the Beijing Olympics where the London organising comittee explaining a smaller budget by saying "London already has its landmarks, Beijing had to build them" (Referring to the bird's nest and water cube) I noticed this was certainly true for Melbourne. Melbourne lacks major landmarks (aside from Flinder's St station, which i'm told was a mistake by an architect) But everywhere I looked I saw quirky and interesting design features that made mundane buildings works of art. Thie picture above is of The Transport hotel in Melbourne that uses visible pipes to deliver beer to the taps and some quirky lighting to add a sense of character and history to a pub that until recently had none.

I feel Sydney relies on it's looks (Opera house, Harbour bridge)to gain global credibility when it should rather focus on the details and the big picture will look after itself. We need those licensing laws for hole in the wall pubs and encouragement of street art and design for a happier place that is inerently better, rather than relying on our "best olympics ever" and fancy bridges.

Another thing I noticed in Melbourne was the sheer volume of Restaurants. Their seems to be a restaurant cafe or bar at every second shop front and I struggled to figure out how they could all continue to operating. After a meal at a place called Il Solito Posto (http://www.ilsolitoposto.com.au/) i figured out why. They are all good. if you serve good food, people will pay to eat it! This was one of the best meals I ever tasted. I had Prawn risotto balls and then Veal tenderloins that were amazing. Go Here!

We also went to Lygon street and had some great pizza for a third of the price. I forget it's name but go to Lygon street and go to the place that doesn't have a spruker hassling you as you go by. (Sprukers are a major turn off, I don't care that your mum is the chef if anything that makes me less likely to eat there!)

If you go for shopping go to Chapel st it's the trendiest and widest variety.

Go to see Wicked! the musical. it was amazing hence i mention it again!

Til next time Peace out!

Songs that I didn't like at first...

Here are a few songs that I didn't like when they were initially popular but have since come to love, in some cases love intensely. It's weird sometimes radio overplay can kill a song but truly good songs will come good in the end.

Daft punk- One More time

When this song first came out it was all over the radio before i knew anything about dance music andfound it repeptitive and boring... My BAD!!

Elton John- Benny and the jets

Such a great song but when i first heard it i found the irregular beat off putting. Oddly its use in some movies like 27 dresses made me come to love it! Bring on Billy Joel Elton John face to face next year!

Rhianna- Umbrella

This song got absolutely thrashed all over commercial radio and it annoyed the shit out of me, but A girl on Idol sang it about 2 years later and it rocked! (yes i love idol, so what?)

Binge Drinking and Feminism

Aren't my titles fun? usually pretty odd combo's of topics but i like it that way. people would lose interest otherwise....

So Saturday night was my first binge drink after the new binge drinking laws came in. No idea why Cargo needs it, as a regular (eww) fights are pretty rare and most of the time the idiot probably deserved it. i found the new laws just made people even more agitated. waiting in longer lines for less drinks and waiting ten minutes for no reason is ridiculous! In conclusion there is no chance these laws will help one bit. THey are punishing business because they can't police the streets effectively because they have no money. If government was that worried, make harsher punishments. Punish the offender not the business.

On that, these laws wouldn't be so bad if people were just sensible. Littering is unecessary. If you are getting drunken food, buy it, eat it put it the bin and leave. not HARD! If you see a pot plant and think its a good idea to knock it over, DON"T!! Someone poor guy will have to clean it up and will complain on AM radio for 6 weeks. If you bump into someone, apologise! Manners people!

Here's a marvellous song that got dedicated to the newsreader on 2UE (Hilarious!) I sent it to a friend it creeped her out though... my BAD!

It reminded me of a lecture i went tot his semester that mentioned that the girl was a major hottie and she shaved her head to avoid being objectified as a woman. Groundbreaking stuff at the time.

Louis Theroux and late Night TV

Why is it that all my favorite TV is on late at night?? Boston legal, 30 Rock, Shipwrecked,The office. Man I have to stay up so late to watch some decent TV.

On the up side, I found Louis Theroux who does documentaries before Shipwrecked on Mondays on Channel 7. His show is done mostly in America and he has a manner that is inexplicably engaging. The things he experiences are very interesting and sometimes funny but often disturbing (see the one on swinging to know what I mean)

This is one I Youtubed on Street Violence in Philidelphia top notch stuff.

This one is hilarious. Advice: Don't question Wreslters about the validity of their "sport"
